Versatile and flattering, the drop-shoulder Voronka Pullover has quickly become a staple in my handmade fall and winter wardrobe! Although lightweight, this cozy sweater is warm without the bulk. It is a double bed pattern written for the standard gauge (4.5mm) knitting machine and ribber.
The Voronka is a traditional pieced construction, finishing at high hip length. The front, back, and sleeves are knitted seperately and then joined using either mattress stitch or a linker. Its casual silhouette, combined with slimmer long sleeves, ensures you won't get lost in extra volume.
The sweater is designed to be worn with 6-8" of positive ease at the bust and approximately 2" of positive ease at the bicep. Measure your bust, and go from there. The written pattern includes 5 sizes with a finished bust circumference of 36 (40, 44, 48, 52) inches; 91 (101, 111, 121, 131) cm.
The pattern includes a variety of subtle yet striking details that offer a great opportunity to practice different machine knitting techniques:
- Contrast I-cord Bind Off
- Decorative Eyelet Increases
- Side Vents
- Non-Flaring Rolled Edges
- Symmetrically Balanced Partial Knit Stripes
- Integrated Funnel Neckline
This pattern is a 23 page PDF with detailed instructions, including technique explanations, some step-by-step photo tutorials, and size-specific graphs to guide you through short row shaping at the shoulders and front neck. Within the pattern you will also find a detailed schematic with garment measurements.
The recommended yarn is Alpaca 2 by Isager, a 2-ply yarn, 50% Wool and 50% Alpaca.
The yarn requirements are:
MC1: 120 (135, 145, 160, 175) grams
MC2: 100 (110, 120, 135, 150) grams
CC: 15 (15, 15, 18, 20) grams
Or select an equivalent yarn that knits up to the specified gauge of 30 stitches and 42 rows over 4” (10cm). For my version, I used two tonally similar colors for MC1 and MC2, with a pop of color for the CC. You can follow this approach, or experiment with color blocking, or even opt for a solid color—there are plenty of creative options!
